U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, an original member of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet, announced her resignation, effective Jan. 11.
“Yesterday, our country experienced a traumatic and entirely avoidable event as supporters of the President stormed the Capitol building following a rally he addressed,” she said in a tweeted statement. “As I’m sure is the case with many of you, it has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside.”
Chao added: “We will help my announced successor Mayor Pete Buttigieg, with taking on the responsibility of running this wonderful department.”
Stephen Bradbury, the acting deputy secretary, is the next in line at the department to succeed Chao, though President Trump has the authority to appoint another person as acting secretary.
