The U.S. Department of Transportation Sept. 16 awarded $1 billion in Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) discretionary grants to 70 projects in 44 states.

The competitive grants are for planning and capital investments in surface transportation infrastructure. The program selection criteria encompassed safety, economic competitiveness, quality of life, state of good repair, environmental sustainability, innovation, and partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders, the agency said.

Projects funded this round include highway expansions, bridge replacements, and freight mobility improvements.

Half the grants are for projects in rural areas. The maximum award is $25 million, and no more than $100 million can be awarded to a single state. See the project list.
