Highway, street and bridge contractors added 47,900 jobs between April and May, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Total industry employment was 372,900, an increase of 0.6 percent from May 2019.
While all construction sectors posted job gains between April and May, highway and bridge construction was the only sector that increased employment above May 2019 levels.
Detailed data for highway and bridge construction is always lagged by one additional month. June employment data for all construction shows that while the industry did regain some jobs compared to May, employment is still 4.6 percent below June 2019 levels. Construction contractors employed 7.36 million workers in June, compared to 7.7 million workers the same last year.
The construction industry unemployment rate was 10.1 percent.
