May data from the U.S. Census Bureau provides the strongest evidence yet that highway construction work has continued and even accelerated amid the broader economic shut down from the impact of COVID-19.
The value of highway pavement work was up 9 percent in May compared to May 2019. For the time period March to May, the value of work performed by highway contractors grew to $17.2 billion from $15.9 billion in 2019, an increase of 8 percent.
