Highway, street, and bridge contractors employed 401,700 workers in October, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This figure represents a 5.7 percent increase from the same time last year. It is the sixth year of October job growth in the transportation construction industry, with levels finally above pre-recession employment. Year to date, road and bridge construction employment is up 9 percent from 2007 levels.
Employment in the overall construction industry increased in October and November as well. And for the first time, November construction employment rose slightly above pre-recession levels. However, year-to-date, while the construction industry has seen eight years of consecutive job growth, it has still not caught up to 2007 employment levels.
