The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Sept. 6 ordered road and bridge contractors to halt their work in preparation for this weekend’s anticipated landfall of Hurricane Irma. Construction operations are suspended until further notice.
Contractors were urged to secure their projects, including Maintenance of Traffic devices and other construction materials and equipment to avoid it becoming safety hazards. FDOT project teams and private firms began documenting work zones in photographs and videos to determine the eligibility of potential future reimbursements.
Gov. Rick Scott suspended highway tolls across the state effective Sept. 5 to encourage and speed evacuations from the Florida Keys and other coastal areas. FDOT is working with the Florida Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies to provide traffic assistance during the emergency period.
FDOT traffic counts at locations across the state are showing steep increases over historical volumes.
