The New York Times and Washington Post May 3 endorsed a federal gas tax increase to support new transportation investments.

The papers were reacting to remarks President Trump made earlier in the week in an interview with Bloomberg News when he said raising the gas tax is “something that I would certainly consider.”

The Times cited ARTBA reporting that 21 states have increased their fuel taxes since 2013, including California, Indiana, Montana and Tennessee just last month. “But states cannot do the job alone,” The Times wrote. “Many large infrastructure projects cross state lines and involve multiple modes of transportation, like road, freight rail and mass transit, putting them beyond the capacity of individual states.”
