Highway and bridge employment increased by 11,800 jobs last year, a 3.8 percent lift from 2015, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Though this is the third year of increased highway and bridge employment, jobs in this sector remain 6.7 percent below 2007 pre-recession levels.
General construction employment follows a similar trend. Employment in this sector increased 4 percent from 2015. January 2017 construction employment is also up 3 percent over January 2016 levels. However, annual construction employment is still down significantly from pre-recession levels.
