Dr. Joseph L. Schofer, associate dean and professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering, received the 2017 prestigious “S.S. Steinberg Award” from ARTBA’s Research & Education Division (RED) during a Jan. 9 annual association meeting in Washington, D.C.

The award is named after the founding president of the RED, and recognizes “an individual who has made remarkable contributions to transportation education.”

Dr. Schofer has taught for five decades, preparing transportation graduates at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate levels. His students have built careers in transportation planning and operations at some of the largest transit and transportation agencies in the country, while others have entered academia to teach the next generation of transportation professionals.

Schofer also lectures to the public on infrastructure design, operations and policies, guides alumni tours and hosts a long-running podcast.
