Americans drove slightly less in August than in July, traveling 284.9 billion total vehicle miles compared to 287.4 billion miles. But August travel this year was up more than 3 percent, or 9.3 billion vehicle miles, from August 2015, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.
Vehicle miles traveled remain on pace for a record in 2016, with cumulative travel on all roads up 3.1 percent, or 65.3 billion vehicle miles, from last year’s tally near 3.1 trillion miles.
The FHWA’s Traffic Volume Trends report is based on hourly traffic count data reported by states, collected at approximately 4,000 continuous traffic counting locations nationwide.
