More than half of the nation’s transportation industry workforce will be eligible for retirement over the next decade, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

This includes engineers, planners, construction workers, welders and other key positions in transportation construction, maintenance and operations.

That’s why Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx is asking transportation industry leaders to join his new Transportation Youth Initiative. The program will provide an introduction to transportation careers through jobs, internships, mentoring and other industry exploration activities over the summer and the months to follow. The idea is to make sure there are enough skilled and semi-skilled workers in the future to help build America’s critical road, bridge and public transit infrastructure.
