The Idaho House on March 30 approved two bills to increase funding for the state’s transportation infrastructure.
Legislation to increase vehicle registration fees and impose new registration fees on hybrid and electric cars passed on a vote of 43 to 26. House Bill 312 would generate an estimated $20 million annually.
Additionally, House Bill 310 was approved 39 to 31. The proposal would utilize a budget stabilization mechanism for the Highway Distribution Account and remove the Idaho State Police from eligibility to receive funding from the account. According to the Fiscal Note, removing the state police would keep $16 million per year in the State Highway Account, while the budget stabilization mechanism could transfer approximately $10 million annually.
Both bills now head to the state Senate for review.
